Tools of the Trade: The Most Important Prospecting Tools

December 19, 2016

Have you caught the gold fever? Think you’re ready to just head out and start your journey? While you’re certainly not going to find gold if you don’t go looking, but you are going to need a few tools to get you started. Also, you don’t go crazy buying all of the more expensive, more involved tools, especially if you’re new to the prospecting game. Here are a few essentials that every novice prospector should have.

A Bucket

Gold Concentrates

Searching for gold requires you to move a lot of water and dirt. One of the most efficient ways to do this is by using a bucket. If you have one in your home that isn’t already being used for any other purpose, perfect. You can check that one off your list. If you need one, you can always head to your local hardware store. And the great thing about a bucket is that it has a second purpose when you’re not using it. You can always turn it upside down and now you have a seat!

A Shovel

You don’t need a big garden or snow shovel when panning for gold. Not only are they unnecessary, they can also be cumbersome and difficult to work with. A small, folding shovel will work just fine (plus it’s easier to transport!). The shovel’s job is simply to move paydirt into your bucket for panning.

Gold Pan

Speaking of panning, what good is going out in search of gold if you don’t have a pan? A gold pan is the simplest tool that prospectors use when separating gold, but it is still quite effective. Gold pans are made of plastic and metal, plastic (particularly green) is your better option.

Pick Axe

A pick axe will help you to break apart rocks in order to find the gold within. Alternately, you can use a hammer and chisel.

Tweezers and Vials

Everyone wants to strike it big and haul in large nuggets, and while it is possible, you’re much more likely to come across a bunch of small flakes. Don’t let these get away. Tweezers will help you effectively remove the gold concentrates from the sediment. The vials will help to keep your finds safe and prevent them from getting lost.

Your Brain!

None of these tools will do you any good if you don’t do a bit of research beforehand. Know where to go, where it’s legal to go, what the rules and regulations of prospecting are and the proper prospecting method. A little bit of research, or talking to seasoned prospectors, will go a long way in ensuring your success.
